I have oft-wondered why Europe hasn't figured out plumbing yet. It's really not that hard.

Furthermore, if I had a euro for every time I've washed my a hands on this continent in a bathroom sink that didn't have a hot water pipe running to it, I'd be able to buy you and me and all my friends in Berlin one big hot lunch right now. Why are we still living in the dark ages over here?

Aye. My dell was killed after only using it for a year and a half and I beat the crap out of it. I also beat the crap out of my mac that i've had since January and it's still ticking. I've also only broken one cord for my mac since I got it and it wasn't even my fault... my dell had something like 16 cords in a year and a half... I'm hell on computers and refuse to use anything other then a mac ever again.

So that dell was replaced from Liverpool when it finally died on June 26.

That lasted until Nov 8: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8ZqSudIWCaE

Is it wrong to record your Dell in death-throes? Or that a new Dell lasts only 5.5 months? (for the record, the Mac that sees more rough treatment and travel is ticking away just fine...)

I say torch the Dell.
Kill it with all the smite filled hate of a man being held back by his dead ass machine. A thought though, about the printer/scanner... maybe buy it but keep in mind that it is not moving with you when you go. Make sure you have someone, or some organization, to gift it too when you leave the area.
On a side note, I am sad that I can't force you to listen to my Harry Potter psycho babble for the next week.
